Character Design

'Character design is the combination of physical traits and narrative'
Narrative/Storyline defines personality, give context (genre, location, setting) therefore has to feed into look and design of character. The face is the primary channel to express emotion (- a reason for the many large headed characters, It gives more room for emotion on the face) A lot can also be said through the character with their posture and body language, this allows for personality traits ti be identifiable in silhouette.

Solarski states that how a character carries their physical weight can tell us about their personality, which body part they lead with is important.
A hero leads with their chest
A character that leads with their pelvis are quite laid back and lazy
If a character leads with their head they are intelligent
A character that leads with there knees they are a coward

Cuddy states that power and dominance revolves around expanding.
Weakness: Cower up and make yourself small
Power: Expand and take up space
Shaggy leads with is knees which shows that he's cowardly

Tintin leads with his head which shows he's intellegent

Superman leads with his chest which shows he's heroic
These cartoons characters have recognisable silhouettes and you can tell who they are quite quickly
